ABOUT THE GI STRATEGY

This Strategy builds on the success of the 2003 GI Strategy for Northern Ireland. It aims to develop an infrastructure to ensure the effective use of locational information in Northern Ireland. The aim is that by 2019 Northern Ireland will be a spatially enabled society in which government use GI as a decision making tool, businesses use GI to increase efficiency, and the public are actively using GI - all on a daily basis.

The vision of the Strategy is:

We will improve services and thereby develop the economy, the environment, and the society of Northern Ireland by placing information about location at everyone’s fingertips and supporting the development of sufficient skills and knowledge to exploit this information.

LATEST NEWS

The GI Strategy for Northern Ireland 2009 – 2019 was officially endorsed by the Minister for Finance, Nigel Dodds OBE MP MLA, and the Northern Ireland Executive on the 5th March 2009.

The Department of Finance and Personnel (DFP), through Land & Property Services (LPS), coordinated the development of the new Strategy. A wide range of stakeholders from across all Northern Ireland Civil Service departments, the private sector and academia were invited to participate in the development of the strategy through online questionnaires, a stakeholder consultation day and a blog website. Their participation was key to the successful development of the Strategy. Input was also invited from the wider community including Great Britain, Ireland and Europe.
